The 12th exam scheduled in June-July was postponed due to the fatal death of the second wave of Corona infection in the country. No final decision has been taken yet on the pending 12th examination. At the same time, the petition seeking cancellation of Class 12 examinations to be conducted by the CBSE and ICSE boards is to be heard in the Supreme Court today. A petition filed by Advocate Mamta Sharma demanded the cancellation of Class 12 board examinations conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) and the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examination (CISCE). The petition has also asked for instructions to prepare an ‘objective methodology’ to declare the results within a specific time frame. Along with this, the top court will also consider another petition filed by Tony Joseph, which has argued that the 12th examinations should not be cancelled.

Education Experts in favor of conducting examination

Significantly, a large section of education experts and heads of institutions are in favor of conducting the examination. Education experts say that the examination should not be canceled and the examination should be conducted using digital mediums. At the same time some experts have argued that even if you have to wait for a few months, the examination must be conducted, because the 12th class exam ends at the end of school education and it also becomes the basis of higher education. At the same time, some also feel that without board exams, students cannot take studies seriously.

In the midst of all this, the question arises that if the examinations are conducted, what are the options of examination before the students and assuming that the examination is canceled then on the basis of which the students of class 12th will be evaluated?

CBSE gave 2 options to conduct the exam

First of all, during the high-level meeting chaired by Union Defense Minister Rajnath Singh on 23 May, CBSE had proposed two options for conducting the 12th examination – first organized regular examination for 19 ‘major’ subjects at the notified centers. And second to conduct objective type examination of short durations (90 minutes) in the respective schools, where students were enrolled between 15 July to 26 August and have to declare the results in September.

The Center had also sought a written opinion from the state governments regarding these options. At the same time, the states have sent their suggestions to the center. If sources are to be believed, most of the states have opted for the second option which involved conducting 90-minute exams for major subjects in the student’s home school. Some states have also insisted on vaccinating the students before the examination. Meanwhile, the CICSE Board has asked its affiliated schools to collect the average marks obtained by the students of class 12 in class 11 and during this session.

At the same time, some academics feel that instead of canceling the exam, online examination should be considered.

Many options are being considered even in the event of exam cancellation

At the same time, if the examination of the 12th is canceled, then in this situation, many options are being considered for the evaluation of the students. In these, it is proposed to assess students on the basis of 9th, 10th and 11th class results

However, nothing is clear right now and CBSE has asked the students and parents to wait till the official decision comes. However, if the stand of the Supreme Court today is in favor of conducting the 12th examination, then it is expected that the schedule of examination will be released on June 1.
